World Atlantic Airlines, formerly known as Caribbean Sun Airlines, is an airline that was founded in September 2002. Originally based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the airline began operations in January 2003, offering flights from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Tortola using the Bombardier Dash 8 Q100 aircraft.
During its early years, Caribbean Sun Airlines cooperated with its sister company, Caribbean Star Airlines, which was also owned by the Stanford Financial Group. This partnership allowed for connecting flights to other Caribbean islands, expanding the airline’s reach and services. However, flight operations ceased in January 2007, leading to a subsequent change of ownership and an unsuccessful attempt to resume operations under the name Merengue Airlines Dominicana.
Eventually, Caribbean Sun Airlines was sold to Tomas Romero, who rebranded the company as World Atlantic Airlines. From that point on, the airline focused on the ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) charter sector. World Atlantic Airlines became one of the charter providers to Myrtle Beach Direct Air until the airline’s bankruptcy in 2012. However, the Department of Transportation fined World Atlantic Airlines in 2012 for regulatory violations related to this business.
Since 2013, World Atlantic Airlines has served as a charter provider to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the deportation of individuals from the United States. In addition to its deportation services, World Atlantic Airlines has been involved in various other charter operations. In April 2013, the airline transported Venezuelan voters from Miami to New Orleans to participate in the Venezuelan presidential election. In September 2017, World Atlantic Airlines entered into a partnership with Avior Airlines, a Venezuelan airline. Prior to this partnership, World Atlantic Airlines had also worked with LASER Airlines as part of its ACMI charter services. Through its collaboration with Avior Airlines, World Atlantic Airlines operated ACMI charter flights to Fort Lauderdale and Miami, further expanding its range of services.
